AIDS Day

It is bad enough that people are dying of AIDS, but no one should die
of ignorance. ~Elizabeth
Taylor
The first documented case of AIDS in India was reported in 1986. Ever since the first report of HIV infection, tackling the issue of social discrimination against HIV/AIDS has been a challenging task. The first reaction to the emergence of HIV/AIDS was to expel HIV-positive visitors, to jail nationals living with HIV or to quarantine people on remote islands. India even went through a period of denial through the late 1980’s. Nothing much has changed since then.

AIDS and Oral Health
|
A smile is more powerful than a thousand words strung together. The mouth is one of the vital organs for communication of desire and feelings. However, close examination of single day of an Aids Victim can sensitize one regarding how much of our body is taken for granted. The AIDS virus can cause serious damage to the mouth and its surrounding structures. The microorganisms normally present in the mouth can play irreversible havoc, attacking not only the teeth but also other structures in the oral cavity under immunocompromised conditions.

Are We Indians
Averse To Using Condoms?
|
Not really. Out of more than a billion condoms being manufactured to help check population explosion and curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, condoms are used for anything but contraception in India. Infact a more than 75% of the manufactured condoms are being used for non-sexual purposes such as sari weavers placing condoms on their thread spools to make it move faster through sewing machines and sari makers using condoms for polishing of silver and gold threads in the traditional Indian outfit. No wonder the rates of HIV incidence in India have not come down even after Government initiatives to promote condom use.

AIDS Treatment and Ayurveda
|
The science of Ayurveda claims to have identified AIDS before 2000 years. The patient is given tonics to boost the immune system followed by administration of preparations to counteract the HIV virus. Later, heavy metal preparations are administered to impart strength. The treatment regime is followed for a period of 6 months. Although several reports argue about the beneficial effects of the treatment, it should be borne in mind that there is no treatment or cure for AIDS at the present.
