Tuberculosis
Robert Koch discovered tuberculosis on March 24th 1880. On March 24, 1882 when he was a young physician and he lectured before the august and elderly doctors of "Physiological Society of Berlin" and told them about his discovery that was the cause of "White Death," a disease responsible for one-seventh of all deaths in Europe in the late part of the 1800's. To commemorates this discovery, every year on 24th March, the WHO has designated this day as
'World Tuberculosis Day'.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 2002 and 2020:
- 1000 million people will be approximately newly infected,
- More than 150 million people will get TB
- And 36 million will die of TB
TB is known to affect people in their most productive age.
Tuberculosis (known more popularly as TB) has made a resurgence in recent years due to AIDS and drug resistance and is likely to cause death of many individuals. TB kills more adults each year than any other infectious disease (more than malaria, diarrhea, AIDS and other tropical diseases).
Awareness about the symptoms of the disease and removal of the stigma about the disease are crucial factors in TB control.
This year (2005), the theme for the 'World No TB
Day' is Find TB, Cure TB and stop TB.
